Praise in the Storm with Linda Wilder

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51:10-12

When I first heard “Praise in the Storm,” I immediately saw, in my head, a woman with dark hair standing before a large picture window. She wipes the condensation off in a circular movement to clear the glass so se can peer out into the storm. Rain falls in sheets. Lightning flashes. Wind blows and snaps branches. Yet, she is safe inside—secure, sheltered and surrounded by warmth and light.

She does not rush out into the storm to fight what she is not equipped to fight. She does not waste time and energy spinning wheels of thought about “what if” or worrying about things she can not control. Besides the storm outside, she is aware of a storm of emotions raging within her own heart. So, she does the only thing she knows to do, the only tried and true method of dealing with past problems. She sits in prayer and devotion, praising God for His faithful protection and provision in the past and pleading for discernment, guidance and strength for the future. She asks for cleansing and forgiveness, for mercy and wisdom and for strength and joy.

Create in me a clean heart O God—Calm the rapid beating of my heart, cleanse it and make it ready for the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit.

And renew a right spirit within me—Blow away the worry and fretting of my human spirit and fill me again with the Holy Spirit you have promised as a Companion and Comforter.

Cast me not away from your presence—Never leave me, Lord. Pull me out of the pit and surround me with your protection.

And take not your Holy Spirit from me—Make me a fit vessel in which your Spirit can live and move and have His being.

Restore to me the joy of salvation—Remind me again of my first love for You—that intoxicating euphoria of being saved from my sin and overcome with gratitude, thanksgiving, love and praise.

And uphold me with a willing spirit—Holy Spirit strengthen and sustain me, cover me with protective armor, grant me wisdom and guide my steps. Fill me with your joy and peace

Storms do change the landscape, but sometimes beneficial changes result. We are in a storm. How will you spend your waiting time?
